The British Red Cross

Optimising Security with Windows 10

The Organisation

Client: The British Red Cross

Industry: Charity & NGO

Services: IT Infrastructure

The British Red Cross, founded in 1870, is a registered charity with more than 17,200 volunteers and 3,400 staff.

The charity responds to conflicts, natural disasters and emergencies in the UK and worldwide.

The Challenge

The British Red Cross faced several challenges with their existing IT infrastructure:

  • An outdated Windows 7 operating system running on 90% of their estate
  • Over 200 laptops, 150 desktops, and approximately 2000 company-owned Android devices spread across multiple sites
  • Incompatible software that needed upgrading
  • A need to optimise security, agility, and user experience

The Solution

Altiatech proposed a comprehensive Windows 10 upgrade to address the British Red Cross's requirements.

The high-level plan included:

  1. Assessment of existing hardware for Windows 10 Readiness
  2. Building a tailored Windows 10 image, with configuration, apps and drivers
  3. Creation of distribution points and task sequence configuration for Windows 10 deployment

To ensure zero disruption during the migration, Altiatech carried out a thorough Windows 10 Readiness Assessment, taking into account the varying hardware and software configurations required across the organisation.

The Results

The deployment and migration to Windows 10 was a huge success, achieving the following results:

  • All areas of the organisation began operating from a modern, productive platform
  • IT security increased substantially, with improved identity and access management, including regular Windows 10 security updates
  • IT administrators gained greater control over a more manageable operating system

The British Red Cross now had a fully up-to-date and future-proof Windows 10 estate. This upgrade positioned the British Red Cross as a successful adopter of Microsoft enterprise technology, enabling them to leverage new capabilities that would support critical business outcomes.

By partnering with Altiatech for this Windows 10 upgrade, the British Red Cross took a significant step towards modernising its IT infrastructure, improving security, and enhancing operational efficiency across its extensive network of volunteers and staff.
